After a nationwide search, the city of Peoria has selected candidates to interview for the police chief position.
Chief Art Miller announced his plans to retire later this year.
The city received and reviewed 30 applications for the position, and the first round of interviews are scheduled for Oct. 9.
Following the interviews, finalists will be invited to participate in additional interviews and meetings with Peoria employees on Oct. 10 and an open house for Peoria residents on Oct. 11.
The city expects to announce a new police chief in November.
The finalists will undergo a comprehensive interview process, which includes interactions with community stakeholders, department personnel, and city leaders. Members of the community are encouraged to participate in this process by attending the open house and providing input on the qualities they believe are essential for the city's next police chief.
“We are dedicated to selecting the best candidate for police chief,” said City Manager Henry Darwin. “The process is thorough and inclusive, involving input from respected professionals in the law enforcement field, department staff, labor representatives and most importantly, our residents. We understand the critical role the police chief plays in shaping the safety and well-being of our city and we are committed to finding a leader who embodies Peoria’s values of professional, ethical, open, respectful, innovative and accountable.”
The open house is open to the public, and Peoria residents are encouraged to meet the candidates.
