Congressional District 1: Shah has lead as count continues
Independent Newsmedia file/Jason W. Brooks
Arizona Congressional District 1 Democratic hopeful Amish Shaw explains one of his qualifications while taking media questions after the May 15 debate, hosted by the Clean Election Commission. Shah led Andrei Cherny as of Wednesday morning in the vote count for the Democratic CD1 nomination.
The Arizona Secretary of State’s website showed 96% of precincts reporting in the July 30 primary elections, as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The website also showed Amish Shah still had the same small lead over his closest Congressional District 1 Democratic primary competitor that he had after Tuesday night’s vote posting.
First results posted Tuesday night on arizona.vote showed Shah had a narrow lead over Andrei Cherny in the six-candidate Democratic primary.
By Wednesday morning, Shah earned 15,159 of the first 62,000 Democratic votes reported, or 24.03%, with Cherny getting 13,492, or 21.39%.
Meanwhile longtime Congressman David Schweikert, the CD1 incumbent, appears to be coasting to another Republican nomination.
Marlene Galan-Woods was third in the widening Democratic race with 13,113 votes, or 20.79%.
Connor O’Callaghan trails Galan-Woods in fourth place with 18.46%, getting 11,664 votes.
Andrew Horne had a total of 7,736 votes after the most-recent batch reported, or 12.26%. Kurt Kroemer has 1,942 votes, or 3.08%.
Schweikert, who has held a seat in Congress since 2011, garnered almost 63% of the nearly 90,000 votes cast in the CD1 Republican primary. He grabbed 54,121 votes so far.
Kim George received 23,487 votes in that Republican primary, or 27.25%. Bob Backie got 8,591votes, or 9.97%.
